The Battle River Watershed Alliance is promoting this Alberta-wide event within our region. Fishing is a great activity to get outside and explore your watershed while gaining an appreciation for ecosystems and your food!
Family Fishing Weekend is a free event which allows anyone to try fishing without a sportfishing license. You must still only fish at locations with an open fishing season, and follow all other rules. Scroll down for resources, links, and maps for more information.

Magpie Nature Camp helps kids find joy in the great outdoors, teaching activities that empower them to connect to nature and find value in stewardship. Campers will learn about wilderness safety and awareness, edible and medicinal plants, fish and wildlife, and survival skills like shelter building, fire starting, and bow and arrow making. We will deepen our connection to nature, build confidence and resilience outdoors, learn ancient skills, and have fun!
Magpie Nature Camp will have 4 cohorts of campers (the same as 2020). Each cohort will run for a half day (morning or afternoon), for 5 days. Cohorts keep our group numbers small, have kids of a similar age and ability together, and ensure our hands-on activities have appropriate supervision.
Cohort 1: Ages 8, 9, & 10. 9:00am to 12:00pm
Cohort 2: Ages 10, 11, & 12. 1:00pm to 4:00pm
Cohort 3*: Ages 8, 9, & 10. 9:00am to 12:00pm
This cohort is full. You may still complete the form to be on a wait list.
Cohort 4*: Ages 11, 12, & 13. 1:00pm to 4:00pm
*This cohort is more advanced, for our older, returning campers.
Space is very limited.
Cost is $75.00 per week per child, PLUS $50.00 per family for a 2021 Fish and Game membership. (Cost does not apply if you are already a member. Membership needs to be renewed annually.)
Example:
A single child attending camp: $75.00 + $50.00 family membership fee = $125.00 total
Two children attending camp: $75.00 + $75.00 + $50.00 family membership fee = $200.00 total
Payments will be made prior to camp, in July.
More details on Camp are in our Magpie Nature Camp Family Handbook.
Coming to camp? Be sure to send us this Health & Safety and Wavier Form.
The Battle River Watershed Reserves the right to adapt the camp cohorts to adjust for requests of our campers, COVID-19 restrictions, and the needs of our staff and supporters.

Ten student groups from across central and northern Alberta have been selected as finalists. These groups of 1-4 students will present their idea answering the question “What can I do to improve my watershed”?
Their final 5 minute presentation to a panel of judges will be recorded earlier in the week, then live-streamed at the event. After the presentations we will share final results and conduct an award ceremony, providing gifts and recognition to the groups.
