2008/09 Annual Report: Chair’s Message
As BRWA Chair for the past three years, I have been able to see this organization move from a newly formed group to one who has embarked on some exciting ventures. Through the past few years, we have been able to engage in some lively discussions on watershed issues, and have had many opportunities to achieve consensus on important – and sometimes difficult – decisions.
Over the past year, the BRWA has added a few new faces to our team. First of all, we have been pleased to see a number of new additions to the BRWA Board of Directors, as well as to the various standing and technical committees. The volunteer and in-kind contributions from these members and agencies are critical to the direction and the work of the BRWA. In addition to the valued work from our Manager, David Samm, and our Communications & Education Coordinator, Maureen Lynch, the BRWA was pleased to welcome Sheila Logelin to our team this year as our new Office Manager. And with the planned hiring of a few additional individuals to assist in a number of new capacities within the next few months, our team will grow even more. Very exciting.
On the project front, we have a number of important ventures planned for the coming year, including projects in the areas of education, extension, and stewardship. After a slight delay, the BRWA is also excited to move ahead with our planned “State of the Watershed” report. As noted last year, this report will investigate the overall health of our entire Battle River watershed. However, instead of just looking at environmental indicators for watershed health, our planned “State of the Watershed” report will also look at the social and economic indicators related to watershed health. Through this three-pronged approach to watershed reporting, we believe that we will be able to truly understand the state of our watershed, which will help us plan for our future.
On behalf of the BRWA Board of Directors, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people who have been involved with the BRWA over the past year. As we move into our fourth year of operation, I look forward to seeing what decisions will be made. As we continue to reach out to new members and new supporting agencies, I know that the BRWA will carry on towards its vision of “A Battle River watershed that sustains the ecological integrity, social, and economic needs of the community it supports.”
