  • Event Date: Friday, October 21, 2011
Location: Ponoka Alberta, along the Battle River

On a beautiful day in October students from St. Augustine school came to the Battle River to help plant trees.  The event was made possible by Courtney and Rhyliegh, grade 8 students at St. Augustine who were finalists in the 2011 Caring for our Watershed contest.

At the final competition, the girls showed a video of the Battle River and the lack of trees along the shore line. Their idea was plant trees to help prevent erosion.  Over the summer with help from Courtney’s father, the girls received sponsorship from Trees Canada and Home Hardware for 30 trees to plant!

About 20 students (all girls!) came out to help plant the trees.  For pictures please visit our Facebook page at

The Caring for our Watersheds Program is proud to support our students in implementing their projects.  Funding is available for all students who are interested in implementation.

  • Event Date: Tuesday, September 27, 2011
    Location: Viking Alberta

This is the 6th time that the Battle River Watershed Alliance has been part of hosting a Wetlands, Trees and Forests event.  Started by the Iron Creek Watershed Improvement Society, we have adopted this winning model for an environmental educational event and are now working with partners to bring this event to students across our watershed.  This September that is to Grade 4-6 students in Viking, Holden and Tofield.

Offered absolutely free to schools, we have invited nearly 200 students to spend a full day exploring the nature world around them through a series of stations hosted by local experts.  From amphibians and reptiles, to trees and riparian areas, these students will have an interactive, educational and fun day to remember!

We would like to thank our partner the Town of Viking-Rural Sustainability Demonstration Town Project as well as the program sponsor Cargill for all of the support.

If you are interested in volunteering at this event, or if you would like to have Wetlands Trees and Forests come to your community, please contact the BRWA Education and Outreach Coordinator Nathalie Stanley at or by phone at 1-888-672-0276.
