Watershed Management Planning
As the ministry charged with water management, Alberta Environment initiated phase I of a Watershed Management Planning process for the Battle River.
Phase I involves the development of a Water Management Plan for the Battle River. The plan will focus on the Battle River and it major tributaries, and look specifically at licensed water use from the river and management of riparian areas along its length. Phase I has been re-scheduled for completion in 2009. See the terms of reference for the Battle River Water Management plan.
The resulting draft Water Management Plan and recommendations will be submitted to the Director appointed under the Water Act. Responsibility for final approval of the water management plan rests with the Minister of Environment (and possibly Cabinet if an “Approved” plan).
Phase II of the Watershed Management Plan will focus on the larger watershed, rather than just the river. In particular, phase II of the planning process will look at drinking water, groundwater, and land uses that affect water quality and quantity.
Collaboration with stakeholders and the general public will be key during the planning process. Watershed residents will be invited to comment on draft water management options for the Battle River.
